The American College of Sports Medicine and the current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation for exercise aimed at improving the health and well-being of non pregnant individuals, suggests that an accumulation of 30 minutes or more should occur on most, if not all, days of the week. In the absence of either medical or obstetric complications, pregnant women can also adopt this recommendation.
Recreational and competitive athletes with uncomplicated pregnancies can remain active during pregnancy.
Epidemiological data suggests that exercise can be beneficial in the primary prevention of gestational diabetes; particularly in morbidly obese women (BMI > 33)
Benefits of Exercise During Pregnancy:
According to the College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, becoming active and exercising at least 30 minutes on most, if not all, days of the week can benefit your health during pregnancy in the following ways:
- May help or prevent or treat gestational diabetes
- Increase your energy
- Helps reduce backaches constipation, bloating and swelling
- Improves your posture
- Improves your mood
- Promotes muscle tone strength and endurance
- Helps you sleep better
- can help your ability to cope with labor because you are more actively fit. This will also help make it easier to get back into shape after the baby is born.
When Can I Exercise After My Baby is Born?
After delivery, one can return to physical activity or exercise within days and begin walking. However, everyone is different and going back to exercising should be gradual. I recommend getting a RX from your doctor to begin more rigorous exercise so that you can also be aware of any concerns or special needs you may have in recovery. Most likely, you will be scheduled for a 6 week check up appointment post natal with your doctor, and that is a good time to get the go ahead from your doctor to begin a personal training specialized exercise program. Most the physiologic and morphological changes of pregnancy persist 4-6 weeks postpartum. Therefore, your personal training can resume as soon as it is physically and medically safe.
Your personal fitness is important. Exercise after pregnancy has also been associated with decrease incidence of postpartum depression.
